8th Grade Dialogue and Reception

The Gloucester County School Boards Association recently hosted the annual "8th Grade Dialogue and Reception." This event honors 8th grade students “whose character, determination, school spirit, leadership and community service inspire all of us”. One student from each middle school in the county was selected for this event. Student Council President, Avery Canna was selected to represent Pitman Middle School because of her dedication to these ideals. Throughout the evening, Avery was part of a panel that was given the opportunity to share their middle school experiences and aspirations while offering recommendations on how to improve the overall middle school experience. Pitman Middle School was well represented!

Mini Model Congress Meeting with Senator Madden

Pitman Middle School Mini Model Congress students and their advisers (Mr. DiTizio and Mr. Chiaro) had a productive meeting with State Senator Fred Madden (District 4) on Friday, February 24th. During this meeting, he discussed his background, the legislative process; offered feedback on student produced bills/ amendments, and allowed students to conduct a question/ answer session. He even took the time to debate Jonah! Pitman’s Mini Model Congress students will be playing major roles in the May 9th Mini Model Congress competition. Isabella Santiago’s (grade 8) bill has been selected for debate and Liam Conner/ Cameron Cronin (grade 8) have been selected for committee chair positions because of their parliamentary procedure knowledge. District administration and the Senator's office were extremely impressed with the work and effort your children (our students) have devoted to this experience.

Puppy Power!

Students in Mrs. Cappello's ELA class have been reading the novels Sable and Winn-Dixie. A recurring theme from these novels is the treatment of stray animals (dogs in particular). To enhance their study of this subject matter, students were treated to a visit from Mrs. Young and rescue puppies from the Gloucester County Animal Shelter. Mrs. Young works for the Clayton Animal Hospital and volunteers her time at the Gloucester County Animal Shelter. Her visit included a discussion about the role of volunteers and the process for housing stray dogs at the shelter. Mrs. Cappello's class eventually plans on doing a collection for the shelter and taking a field trip to visit more of the animals.
