DEAR PROJECT MARKING PERIOD 2 DUE BEFORE OR NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, JANUARY 18th
Due Date: 1/18/2013
Subject: 8th Grade ELA

THE DIRECTIONS: From your independent reading book, you will need to do a creative project that somehow relates to what you read. You have complete control and choice over what type of project you want to do.

1. This project must be turned before or no later than January 18th, before the end of marking period 2, and you must complete the book you are reading within marking period.

 2. This will require reading in class and reading at home.

3. You are encouraged to hand in your book project before January 18th, and may choose another book to read for the rest of the marking period. You will not have to do two book projects if you read more than one book a marking period.

THE CHOICE: On the DEAR Book Project for Marking Period 2 link, there are fifty different projects options. Pick one project you will enjoy doing AND be able to easily relate to your reading of the book.

THE PROJECT: No matter what project you choose, the final project needs to somehow contain these elements:

1.     The title and author of the book that you read.

2.     Explains and describes the events, characters, and theme.

3.     It is creative and appealing to the eye—it is colorful, neat, organized, and obvious time, effort, and thinking is present.

Students will use class time and time at home to work on this DEAR independent reading project.  The directions and options for the assignment are in the File Manager link.

Subject: 8th Grade ELA

Character Sketch Project

Before you begin your character drawing, I would like you do to the following on a separate sheet of paper:

·        Write a minimum of two paragraphs about one of the main characters in the story The Outsiders. (If you know the character really well write three!)

·        Make sure you include some facts from the novel, and some specifics that the author has

already told you about the main character—like looks, likes, dislikes, goals and

values.

·        You should also include some of your own opinion about what you think of your

character. For instance, why you think the character is unique or not unique, what the character’s relationships are like, and what the character’s behavior and personality are like. When you give your own opinion, make sure that you explain why you feel this way about the main character.
·        When you have finished your two paragraphs, you will need to find a passage from the novel that shows what you are going to draw.

·        You will put this passage on the bottom section of you drawing and will make sure to include the page number.

*Drawing* Your illustration must have details that are given in the story about the character and about the setting (you cannot make up how he/she looks or a setting where the story takes place)
